Gap Year Success Stories from Mifra Students

Some of the strongest examples of growth within our program come directly from MIFRA alumni who transformed their paths through a football gap year in Spain. These players not only improved their level on the field but also changed their college soccer opportunities entirely. Their journeys show how the right environment, structure, and competition can elevate a player’s trajectory in ways traditional development often cannot.
From Division III Prospects to Division I Commits
A well-structured gap year can completely redefine a player's recruiting ceiling. Two of our recent success stories highlight this transformation:
Aaron Zhao: Before joining MIFRA, Aaron had several Division III options after competing in the ECNL system in the United States. After spending one season with us—training daily in Spain, developing tactically, and competing at a higher pace—he completely shifted his recruitment profile. By the end of his gap year, he committed to a Division I program, proving how powerful the right football gap year outcomes can be.
Xavier Egurbide: Xavier entered the recruiting process late after playing in MLS NEXT. He came to MIFRA seeking exposure and professional-grade development. Within just one season, he also earned a Division I commitment, showcasing how quickly a player can catch up and surpass expectations in the right environment.

The Bridge to College Readiness: Coach Recommendations
One of the clearest examples of trust from U.S. college coaches is Patrick O’Donohue. His college coach specifically recommended taking a gap year with MIFRA because he didn’t feel Patrick was fully ready for the demands of Division I soccer as a freshman.
Knowing the level of training and competition our players face, the coach trusted that a year with us would prepare him properly—and it did. Patrick returned:
Stronger and more physically prepared.
More confident in his decision-making.
More complete as a player.
This validates the development model behind our program and demonstrates why top-tier coaches see MIFRA as a reliable finishing school for their recruits.
Why MIFRA Alumni Stand Out
These stories highlight what our students consistently experience: a gap year done the right way can open doors, raise levels, and change careers. By choosing a program that emphasizes elite competition and personal accountability, players ensure they are not just taking a year off, but taking a massive step forward.
